Quick Answer

Sanding Ovations 2026, the 17th annual Master's Cup, runs Thursday, November 19 through Sunday, November 22 on Treasure Island Beach, with an encore weekend Friday, November 27 through Sunday, November 29. It is free, it is the biggest sand sculpting competition in Florida, and the master sculptors start building on November 11 — a full week before the gates open, which is the best time to watch the work happen without a crowd.

Location: the beach behind the Bilmar Beach Resort, 10650 Gulf Blvd., Treasure Island, about 30 to 45 minutes south of Clearwater Beach depending on traffic.

What Sanding Ovations Actually Is

Treasure Island calls itself the Sand Sculpture Capital of Florida, and this is the event that earned it. Master sculptors from the U.S., Canada, Ireland, France, and Russia work a limited patch of beach for days, turning loose sand and water into towers, figures, and scenes that hold their shape only because of how precisely the sand is packed and misted.

The 2026 theme is "Music is the Key." Dan Doubleday, a Treasure Island sculptor and co-owner of the event, designs this year's build.

It is not a craft fair with a sandbox. According to Destination Analysts, the 2021 edition (Sanding Ovations Presents Sandlantis) generated an estimated $9.4 million economic impact and 42,500 visitors. The sculptures stay on the beach through December if the weather allows, so late-November and early-December visitors still see them.

Dates, Hours, and What Happens Each Day

Main weekend hours, per the organizer's 2026 schedule (checked November 8, 2026):

DayHoursHighlights
Wed Nov 186-8 PMMeet the Masters at Waves Beach Bar, Bilmar Beach Resort ($20, includes hors d'oeuvres and sponsor beers, cash bar for mixed drinks)
Thu Nov 1910 AM-9 PMSculptures, kites, vendors, music; Silent Dance Party 6-9 PM ($10 ticket)
Fri Nov 2010 AM-10 PMPeoples Choice voting 10 AM-4 PM ($1 a ticket, $5 for 7)
Sat Nov 2110 AM-10 PMPeoples Choice voting 10 AM-4 PM; free kids sand sculpting and kite lessons at 11 AM and 2 PM; awards 6 PM; fireworks 10 PM
Sun Nov 2210 AM-6 PMFree kids lessons at 11 AM and 2 PM; closing day

The fireworks on Saturday night are presented by Alpha Fireworks Displays, and they are the single biggest reason to pick Saturday over the other days if you are only coming once.

Encore Weekend: Nov 27-29

You may see the encore listed as "Nov 27-29" in some places and "Nov 28-29" in others. Both are describing the same thing, and the organizer's own 2026 schedule settles it: the encore is a three-day weekend with a soft Friday.

DayHoursHighlights
Fri Nov 27Vendors open 3 PMFlorida vs Florida State game at 3:30 PM on the beach; Jason Parker Trio plays Sloppy Joes 7-9 PM
Sat Nov 2810 AM-6 PMOhio State vs Michigan at 12 PM on the beach
Sun Nov 2910 AM-6 PMNFL game TBD at 1 PM on the beach

If your group cares about football more than sandcastles, the encore is the better weekend. The sculptures are still standing, and the crowd is a fraction of the main weekend's.

It Is Free, and It Is Cashless

Admission to Sanding Ovations costs nothing. That is worth saying plainly, because a lot of sand-sculpting events in Florida are ticketed.

It is also a cash-less event. Bars, merchandise, and parking take credit or debit only, and all charges come from the City of Treasure Island. Do not show up with a wallet full of twenties and no card.

Paid add-ons if you want them: the Meet the Masters reception ($20), the Silent Dance Party ($10), People's Choice voting tickets ($1 each, $5 for seven), and beach chair rentals from Taylor Beach Event Services ($5 for up to two hours, $10 for the day, 727-200-5390). Bring your own chair and blanket for the music and you pay nothing beyond food and parking.

Getting There and Parking (Read This Before You Drive)

Parking is the part people get wrong. Treasure Island is a narrow barrier island, Gulf Blvd. backs up badly during this event, and the free shuttle is the answer.

Free bus shuttles run from three mainland lots:

  • Treasure Bay, 10315 Paradise Blvd.
  • Paradise Lutheran Church, 10255 Paradise Blvd. (Saturday and Sunday only, and that lot opens at 1 PM on those days)
  • The Club at Treasure Island, 400 Treasure Island Causeway (park only in the green highlighted areas on the organizer's map)

Shuttle hours: Friday Nov 20 from 4-11 PM (Treasure Bay and The Club only), Saturday Nov 21 from 11 AM-11 PM, Sunday Nov 22 from 11 AM-7 PM, and Saturday Nov 28 and Sunday Nov 29 from 11 AM-7 PM. Buses run roughly every 15 to 30 minutes depending on traffic.

There are also neighborhood shuttles from Paradise Island and Sunset Beach, and a Madeira Beach shuttle from the John's Pass area, which is genuinely useful if you are coming from the north: park at John's Pass Park, the 130th Avenue lot, or the John's Pass parking garage, walk under the bridge to the marked pickup spot, and ride in. That shuttle runs 10 AM-11 PM Saturday Nov 21 and 10 AM-7 PM Sunday Nov 22, Saturday Nov 28, and Sunday Nov 29.

Driving straight in? The Treasure Island Park lot at the Community Center off 104th Avenue is $30 event parking, credit or debit only, open 8 AM until late on event days. Metered city lots are scattered along Gulf Blvd. at the Community Center, St. Pete Municipal Beach at 112th, Gulf Front Park, Sandpiper Lot, and City Hall.

Rideshare drop-off and pickup is at City Hall, 10451 Gulf Blvd. Set that as your destination instead of the beach address, or your driver will fight the Gulf Blvd. crawl for nothing.

Our Clearwater Beach parking guide covers the beach side of the county, and the November events guide has the rest of the month.

The Sculptors

The 2026 field is a proper international one. Confirmed on the organizer's sculptor page:

  • Dan Doubleday (Treasure Island) — co-owner of Sanding Ovations, world and international champion, and the designer of this year's event
  • Meredith Doubleday (Treasure Island) — 35 years in the sand, and the first woman to win a medal at the World Championship
  • Jonathan "Jobi" Bouchard (Canada) — five first-place finishes at Sanding Ovations, a record
  • Abe Waterman (Prince Edward Island, Canada)
  • Fergus Mulvany (Ireland) — multiple European and Moscow championship wins
  • Benoit Dutherage (France) — a former haute cuisine chef, now a full-time sand sculptor
  • Mélineige Beauregard (Montreal) — 2016 Grand Champion of the World Championship of Taiwan
  • Sue McGrew (Tacoma, Washington) — winner of CBC's "Race Against the Tide" and a veteran of 85 competitions in 35 countries
  • Deborah Barrett-Cutulle (Saugus, Massachusetts) — eight straight years at Sanding Ovations
  • Damon Meri (Seminole, Florida) — the local favorite, five first-place pro/am wins
  • Ilya Filimontsev (Russia) — more than 150 international sand events
  • Bruce Phillip (Carlsbad, California)

The sculpting starts November 11, a week before the event opens. Mid-week mornings during build week are the quietest, closest look you will get at the work.

Beach Rules Worth Knowing

These are city ordinances, not event suggestions, and they are enforced:

  • No dogs. Animals are barred from the beach under Treasure Island ordinance Sec. 6-40. Leave the dog at home; this is not a dog-friendly event.
  • No glass on the beach (Sec. 58-43).
  • No smoking or vaping on public beach and parks (Ordinance 2023-10).
  • Beach wheelchairs are free at the information and merchandise tent, first come first served, with a valid driver's license as a deposit.

Make a Weekend of It

Treasure Island sits between St. Pete Beach and Madeira Beach, which means John's Pass Village, the Corey Avenue district, and a long stretch of Gulf-front restaurants are all within ten minutes of the sand sculptures. If you are building the trip around the event, the where to stay guide compares beach-to-downtown options on the Clearwater side, and staying there puts you 30 to 45 minutes north of the festival with a wider choice of hotels.
