Exploring Dunedin: A Local Neighborhood Guide

A local guide to Dunedin, Florida — craft breweries, Honeymoon Island, Caladesi Island, waterfront restaurants, the Pinellas Trail, and how to plan your day from Clearwater Beach.

Why Dunedin?

Just 20 minutes north of Clearwater Beach, Dunedin is the kind of Florida town that makes you slow down. It's quieter than the beach strip, walkable, and packed into a few blocks of Main Street — but the waterfront is still right there, and the food scene punches well above its size.

If Clearwater Beach is where you go for the sand and the scene, Dunedin is where you go for the local version: craft breweries, waterfront dining, bike trails, and two of the top beaches in Florida that most visitors never reach.

The Waterfront

Dunedin's waterfront runs along St. Joseph Sound and the Intracoastal Waterway. The Pinellas Trail — a 47-mile paved path built on a retired railway corridor — cuts right through downtown and connects to Tarpon Springs in the north and St. Petersburg in the south. It's flat, shaded in stretches, and perfect for biking, walking, or jogging. Bike rentals are available downtown if you didn't bring your own.

The Dunedin Marina at 51 Main St is the departure point for several boat tours and fishing charters. ParrotDise Express runs dolphin watching and sunset cruises with complimentary drinks. Wind Star Sailing Charters offers private and semi-private sailing trips on St. Joseph Sound — a genuinely quiet, wind-powered experience with no engine noise.

For fishing, Capt. Jared's Inshore Fishing Charters runs flats and nearshore trips out of the Dunedin Marina, and Daisy Mae Fishing Charters — operating since 1951 — runs private offshore charters from the same slips.

Honeymoon Island and Caladesi Island

Two of Florida's top beaches sit just off Dunedin's coast, and neither requires a long drive.

Honeymoon Island State Park is connected to Dunedin by a causeway — you can drive straight across. It has four miles of white sand beaches, a nature trail through a slash pine forest, and one of the few remaining virgin slash pine stands in Florida. The beach faces the Gulf and is significantly less crowded than Clearwater Beach. Parking is $8 per vehicle. The island also has a dog beach on the south end — one of the few places in Pinellas County where dogs can swim in the Gulf.

Caladesi Island State Park is only accessible by boat. The ferry departs from Honeymoon Island every 20-30 minutes ($20 per adult round trip, $10 for kids 6-12, per Florida State Parks, checked September 2026). Once you land, you get three miles of undeveloped beach, a mangrove trail for kayaking, and a small café. Caladesi has been repeatedly ranked among America's top beaches — and going there feels like stepping back before Florida was developed.

Downtown Dunedin: Breweries and Main Street

Dunedin's craft beer scene is one of the strongest on Florida's Gulf Coast. Within a few blocks of downtown you'll find:

  • Dunedin Brewery (937 Douglas Ave) — Florida's oldest craft brewery, founded in 1996. Open daily with a rotating tap list, live music, and a happy hour food menu that's genuinely good value. See our Happy Hour Guide for details.

  • 7venth Sun Brewery (1012 Broadway) — Small-batch creative beers with a laid-back taproom. Thursday Local Night (50% off draft pours for Dunedin residents) is a local institution.

  • Woodwright Brewing Company (985 Douglas Ave) — House craft drafts with Thursday Bluegrass Jam Night that draws a loyal crowd.

  • Soggy Bottom Brewing Co. (660 Main St) — A Main Street microbrewery with a relaxed vibe and solid house beers.

Downtown Dunedin itself is walkable and full of independent shops — antiques, art galleries, a Scottish shop (Dunedin has strong Scottish heritage — the name comes from the Gaelic word for Edinburgh), and several ice cream and coffee spots.

Where to Eat

Dunedin's restaurant scene has grown significantly in recent years. The highlights:

  • Bon Appétit Restaurant & Marina Bar (148 Marina Plaza) — Award-winning waterfront dining overlooking St. Joseph Sound and Caladesi Island. The outdoor Marina Bar runs a daily social hour with discounted drinks and appetizers — call for current times (727-733-2151). One of Dunedin's most reliable dinner spots.

  • Olde Bay Cafe & Dunedin Fish Market — Overlooks the Dunedin Marina with a fresh seafood counter attached. Grab lunch on the patio and watch the boats come in.

  • Marker 8 Tiki Bar & Grill (1420 Bayshore Blvd) — A waterfront tiki bar on the Dunedin Causeway with boat slips, sunset views over St. Joseph Sound, and a relaxed tropical atmosphere.

  • Clear Sky Draught Haus — One of TripAdvisor's top-rated Dunedin restaurants, serving American fare with a strong craft beer selection.

Getting There

Dunedin is about 15-20 minutes north of Clearwater Beach by car. Take Causeway Blvd west to the Clearwater Memorial Causeway, head north on US-19 or alt-19 (Bayshore Blvd is the scenic route along the water), and follow signs to downtown Dunedin.

If you're staying on Clearwater Beach and want to make a day of it, the route along Bayshore Blvd is worth the extra few minutes — it runs right along the Intracoastal Waterway and gives you a feel for the barrier-island side of Pinellas County.
