Clearwater Beach Restaurants: Where Locals Actually Eat
Share

Clearwater Beach has no shortage of places to eat — the problem is figuring out which ones are actually worth your time and money. This guide cuts through the noise with restaurants we'd genuinely recommend to someone standing on the beach right now, hungry, trying to decide where to go tonight.

We've organized by what you're probably looking for: beachfront casual (sandals welcome), upscale waterfront (make a reservation), and a few picks just off the beach that locals rate higher than the tourist traps.

Beachfront Casual: Sandals Welcome

These are the spots where you walk in off the sand, grab a table, and eat with a Gulf view. No reservations needed at most, no dress code beyond "shirt and shoes."

Frenchy's Rockaway Grill

7 Rockaway St, Clearwater Beach | (727) 446-6424 | frenchysonline.com

Frenchy's is the restaurant everyone tells you to try, and they're right. The World Famous Grouper Sandwich ($19.95) earned its reputation — fresh grouper fried or blackened, served on a bun with their signature she-crab soup on the side. The dining room is open-air, right on the sand, with live music daily and sunset views that don't require a reservation.

Frenchy's actually operates five restaurants on Clearwater Beach, each slightly different: the Original Cafe (the first, opened 1982), Rockaway Grill (beachfront, live music), Saltwater Cafe (more upscale), South Beach Bar (sports bar), and the Outpost (tiki bar). Rockaway Grill is our pick for first-timers.

Crabby's Dockside Clearwater

37 Causeway Blvd, Clearwater Beach Marina | (727) 461-1900 | crabbysdocksideclearwater.com

Three stories of open-air waterfront dining at the Clearwater Beach Marina, with panoramic harbor views from every level. The menu leans seafood — grouper, shrimp, crab, the usual Gulf suspects — with a raw bar and daily specials. Good for groups because the seating is extensive and the layout means you usually don't wait long.

Palm Pavilion Beachside Grill & Bar

10 Bay Esplanade, Clearwater Beach | (727) 446-2851 | palm-pavilion.com

Operating on Clearwater Beach since 1926 — that's a century of serving meals right on the sand. Palm Pavilion is the kind of place where you can get breakfast, lunch, and dinner with your toes practically in the Gulf. The breakfast menu is underrated — the early morning ocean view with eggs and coffee is a top start to a Clearwater Beach day. Happy hour runs Mon–Fri 4pm–7pm with $2 draft beers and discounted drinks.

Cooter's Restaurant & Bar

1125 Mandalay Ave, Clearwater Beach | (727) 447-3663

Family-owned since 1993 and famous for fresh Florida stone crab claws in season (October–May). Cooter's is more of a local hangout than a tourist destination — sports bar vibe, outdoor patio, straightforward seafood. If you want stone crab without the white-tablecloth prices, this is your spot.

Upscale Waterfront: Make a Reservation

When you want more than a grouper sandwich — a real dinner, a nice bottle of wine, a table with a view — these are the picks that deliver.

Caretta on the Gulf

500 Mandalay Ave (Sandpearl Resort) | (727) 674-4171 | opalcollection.com/sandpearl

Clearwater Beach's only AAA Four-Diamond restaurant. Caretta sits inside the Sandpearl Resort with floor-to-ceiling Gulf views and a seasonal menu built around organic seafood, local produce, and an extensive wine list. Breakfast ($13-24), lunch ($13-24), dinner ($31-50+). Sunday brunch is a local tradition — book ahead.

Named to TripAdvisor's Best Fine Dining list for 2026. If you're celebrating an anniversary or a milestone, this is where you go on Clearwater Beach.

Bob Heilman's Beachcomber

421 S Gulfview Blvd, Clearwater Beach | (727) 446-3474 | beachcomberclearwater.com

Family-owned since 1948, Bob Heilman's is the old-school Clearwater Beach dinner spot — fresh-caught seafood, prime steaks, award-winning wines, and live piano music during dinner. The restaurant includes Bobby's Bistro for a more casual atmosphere. Opens at 5pm for dinner service only.

This is the place when you want a proper steak on the beach without going to Tampa. Reservations recommended, especially on weekends.

Island Way Grill

20 Island Way, Clearwater | (727) 461-6617 | islandwaygrill.com

Technically just off the beach (about 5 minutes from the Causeway), Island Way Grill sits on Clearwater Harbor with 40 private boat docking slips and waterfront views. The menu mixes seafood, sushi, and steaks — the sushi bar is genuinely good, which is unusual for a waterfront grill. Sunday brunch is popular with locals. Wood-fired grill, private events available.

Rooftop and Late Night

Jimmy's on the Edge

505 S Gulfview Blvd, 10th Floor (Pier House 60) | (727) 461-7674 | jimmysontheedge.com

The largest rooftop bar on Clearwater Beach — 10 stories up with 360-degree views of the Gulf and the Intracoastal. The sunset from here is one of the top views on the beach, and they know it — free sunset shots at dusk during happy hour (Mon–Fri 3pm–6pm). The food menu is solid (burgers, tacos, seafood) but the view is the reason you're here.

Marina Cantina Tequila Bar & Grill

25 Causeway Blvd (Clearwater Beach Marina) | (727) 287-5764 | marinacantina.com

Rooftop patio overlooking the Clearwater Marina with a Mexican fusion menu and one of the most extensive tequila selections on the beach. The margaritas are the draw — fresh-squeezed, creative flavor combinations, and a rooftop sunset to match. Happy hour daily with $8 signature cocktails including the Clearwater Sunset. Weekend brunch is worth the trip.

Badfins Food + Brew

315 S Gulfview Blvd, Clearwater Beach | badfinsfoodbrew.com

A TripAdvisor Travelers' Choice recipient with a large local craft beer wall and a coastal Mexican grill menu. Badfins is the spot when you want craft beer and good food late at night — they serve lunch, dinner, and late-night with an outdoor patio. The fish tacos and ceviche are standouts.

Salty's Island Bar & Grill

521 S Gulfview Blvd, Clearwater Beach | saltysislandbar.com

Tropical beach atmosphere across from the Gulf with live music every night. Salty's is casual, loud, and fun — the kind of place where you end up staying longer than planned. Standard island bar menu with seafood, burgers, and tropical drinks. Late-night kitchen is a plus when everywhere else has closed.

Just Off the Beach

Columbia Restaurant (Sand Key)

1 Bay Esplanade, Clearwater (Sand Key) | (727) 596-2275 | columbia-restaurant.com

Part of Florida's oldest restaurant company (established 1905 in Ybor City), the Columbia on Sand Key serves Spanish and Cuban cuisine with panoramic Intracoastal Waterway views. The 1905 Salad, the Cuban sandwich, and the yellow rice and chicken are classics. Outdoor deck seating, indoor dining room, and a full bar. About 10 minutes from Clearwater Beach across the bridge.

Coming Soon to Downtown: Rippers Clearwater

Downtown Clearwater has a notable name on the way. Rippers, a new restaurant from a team with Michelin-starred background, is planned for 534 Cleveland Street in the historic Telephone Building, according to reporting from Tampa Bay Business Wealth and I Love the Burg (September 2026). It would be the first project from a Michelin-experienced team announced for downtown Clearwater.

No opening date or menu has been confirmed yet. If you're searching for Rippers in Clearwater before it opens, this section will be updated as details are announced, and the restaurant's own channels will have the latest.

Tips for Eating on Clearwater Beach

  1. Walk or take the Clearwater Ferry. Parking on Clearwater Beach is paid everywhere and fills up fast, especially evenings and weekends. If you're staying downtown, the Clearwater Ferry is cheaper than parking and drops you near the marina restaurants.

  2. Make reservations for upscale spots. Caretta on the Gulf, Bob Heilman's Beachcomber, and Island Way Grill all recommend reservations, especially Friday and Saturday nights.

  3. Go early for sunset. Rooftop spots (Jimmy's, Marina Cantina) fill up 60-90 minutes before sunset. Arrive by 6pm for a sunset table during summer.

  4. Frenchy's has five locations. If Rockaway Grill has a 45-minute wait, walk to the Original Cafe or Saltwater Cafe — they're all on Clearwater Beach and the grouper is the same.

  5. Happy hour is real here. Several restaurants run genuine happy hours with significant discounts. See our Clearwater Beach Happy Hour Guide for the full list — it covers 30+ verified spots across Clearwater Beach, Dunedin, Safety Harbor, and Madeira Beach.

  6. Stone crab season is October–May. Cooter's is the spot for fresh stone crab claws, but they're seasonal — don't expect them in summer.

What to Order on Clearwater Beach

If it's your first visit and you want the definitive Clearwater Beach food experience, here's the shortlist:

  • Grouper sandwich at Frenchy's Rockaway Grill — the dish that put Clearwater Beach on the food map
  • Yellow rice and chicken at Columbia Restaurant — a Florida classic since 1905
  • Stone crab claws at Cooter's (October–May only)
  • Sushi on the water at Island Way Grill
  • Margaritas at sunset at Marina Cantina or Jimmy's on the Edge
